Since I’m a music ed major, most of the classes I’m taking do not have much to do with international studies. However, being culturally aware is so important for becoming a teacher. In my “Intro to Music Education” class, we’ve discussed how a teacher has to be aware of students’ race, religion, ethnicity, sexuality, etc. I think this definitely ties in with international studies. Both subjects are all about acceptance despite differences. In my classes, we talk about making the classroom a “safe place” for kids, where they will not feel judged despite maybe not fitting into all of the societal norms. Diversity is a huge aspect of the classroom and I think what I’ve learned about various cultures and religions in the Understanding the Global Community class will help me tremendously!
