I haven’t yet gotten involved with an international group, so here are three that I’ve been mulling over:
Global Brigades – This one honestly just had a cool name, so I clicked on the link and looked at it a little more, and it sounds genuinely interesting. It’s a global volunteering club to promote global health and work towards removing economic disparities around the world. I don’t know what the club would do on a day to day basis, but it certainly sounds interesting and a good way to get a taste for working abroad.
Spanish Club – Spanish Club appeals to me because I really would like to practice my Spanish. This semester, I’ve fallen off the Spanish wagon. I haven’t practiced reading, writing, or speaking in Spanish much, aside from helping some of my friends with their intro Spanish homework. I feel like this club would put me in a good environment to practice speaking Spanish and get a better feel for the culture, too.
International Affairs Society – I’m not sure if I would be allowed to join IAS, because I’m not planning to pursue an IAS major or minor. If I were allowed to, I think it’d be a great opportunity to not only personally learn about the global community, but also create avenues for others to learn about global issues and other cultures by helping to organize international events.
I think I’ll need to do some more research about these clubs and attend a few meetings before I decide which I’d like to be involved in. I also would need to choose an international group with an appropriate time-commitment level for me, since I’ve just taken on a more demanding position at the Daily (online editor next semester!) and I want to make sure I can give both adequate amounts of attention.
